Thank you for taking time to search, access, and reflect upon a nonfiction related to a current issue happening in a region or country in Africa.    Please organize your five categories of response in the comment space at the end of this post in the following manner; you may use block paragraphing to separate sections.

MLA Citation of Your Actual Information Source (you may use NoodleTools or the built in MLA style citation of your article to create the generation.  See Ms. Hamilton if you need help!).

Factual Summary:  short summer of the nonfiction piece you’ve read

Vocabulary:    
A.  Identify vocabulary words in the article that were unfamiliar or somewhat difficult to understand
B.  Explain how your resolved of understanding with the words

Interpretation:  what was the main point the author wanted you to get from reading this work?

Criticism:
A.  With which points of the piece did you agree or find easy to accept?  Why?
B.  With which points of the piece did you disagree or find difficult to believe? Why?

Personal Response:  

What do you think about this piece  OR how does this piece influence your ideas?

Paragraph One–You may use one of the writing sparks on the back of the Reader Response hand-out to get you started. Make sure that whichever one you choose informs your understanding of the soldier and his family. Identify the issue they face and all the elements involved.

Paragraph Two–Same directions as for Para One

Paragraph Three–Compose a lead-in for a quote from the pages you have read for today and type thequote with an MLA citation. The quote must relate to the soldier and his or her family. Explain how the quote helps you understand a specific issue they are facing. How do they cope with the issue?

On Friday, we watched Dateline NBC’s special, Winds of War.  Take a few minutes to review the video and reflect on our viewing of it; you may rewatch any clips as needed.

In a multi-paragraph response, discuss:

• What ideas, information, or statements stood out to you from the video segments?  Why?
• After your research on issues in Africa (and many of you focused on Sudan) and after watching these video segments, do you think the United States and President Obama should take a stronger stance on advocating for peace in Sudan (http://sudanactionnow.org/index)?  Why or why not?
• If you could pose one “how” or “why” question to either George Clooney or journalist Ann Curry, what would you ask?
